Warsaw
I think this city is appropriately named
War saw
It has seen a lot of war
Shitler blew this place apart during WW2.
Up we get
Like usual I hear
"5 more minutes papa"
We make a big veggie scramble
And head out across a crappy park that the city is redoing with bike paths.
To the west bus station
We buy an all day pass for $1
We take the bus into the new part of the city and then get off at the end of the line in "old town"
Old town was demolished in the war, but the city decided to rebuild all the buildings as they were on the original foundations.
It looks old!
Also the government buildings, museums etc in this area all look old.
We walk thru plazas and act like tourists!
We decide to stop and get a drink
Me a wonderful polish beer "zywiek"
Liam a fanta, now soft drinks in Europe are served in 6oz bottles, that's not a thirst quencher, so liam orders a white russian, don't tell his dad!
Wow it looks great , piled with whipped cream..
He licks off the whipped cream, takes a sip ,
YECK !
It's loaded with just vodka and coffee.....welcome to eastern Europe
Off we go,
Now we check out the tourist rent a bike which are lined up everywhere, ( even in portland)
We can't figure out how much they are from the limited info on the self help kiosk.
We walk, looking for scooter rentals
Eventually down an alley a few kilometers away we find Peter and his 4'x8' scooter rental shop.
Now Liam has never driven a scooter or motorcycle.
Luckily they are automatic
It's gonna be a whopping 150 zloty for 4 hrs for 2 New scooters. Plus gas!
Liam gives me the eye roll.
Of course the scooters are parked 2 blocks away in Warsaw s busiest intersection, Peter logs the 3 already existing scratches on the scooters down on the contract, we put on our helmets, and off we go into the entanglement
Oh yeah I asked Peter where we could go for authentic polishfood (inexpensive).
So we buzz away
We ride across a bridge over a pretty river, go by the stadium, back thru old town, and we start searching in residential (apartments) neighborhoods for the restaurant.
We eventually find it. We asked Peter to write down the traditional dishes.
In we go and it's clean small and behind the counter is gramma. She rattles off a bunch of polish, I try to look smaaaht, and begin the pointing game. We get a plate full of sniztchel and potatoes, a side coleslaw type salad and a drink each. Oh yeah my side salad was tomatoes, and liams was onions ...it looked like coleslaw!
It came to a whopping $11
Off we go riding around the city, we try to find the music venue Liam is going to tonite, but we are bogged down in massive traffic jams, oh yeah it's 530 ....
We decide to head back to the rental shop, we manage to find it, but we're 45 minutes early so we wander down streets without traffic and come to a beautiful roundabout ( by the way these are also called rotaries, in New England, and they are the way most intersections happen in europe) there s a church, a theatre, pretty buildings, the sun is out, we stop at an open air cafe , have a drink and watch the people...time to return the scooters, wish Peter good luck, and bus back to our home sweet home.
