Got an email last nite from Chris in Bern that we'll hike with Thursday. He said check out surnanpass  a 6 hr. hike. Outside of engelberg Ok we internet search, hikes. A route to there, campsites, the usual etc.. the search isn't going easy, lackof campgrounds, rich town expensive hostels, etc. Liam says let's stop in aldorf its near our destination, at the tourist info office. Ok we head out of Italian switzerland. Tunnels tunnels tunnels, and avalanche fences 2,000 meters up on hills. And I've forgotten to write about this... in the mountain regions where a stream will come down to intersect a road they build a ramp over  the road and the stream goes overhead. This is true in avalance areas. There will be overhead bridges on the highway for the snow to pass overhead . There were a number of these on this pass.  The valley we enter is once again amazingly picturesque. We're off the highway soon, only travelled 1 hr. We wander around aldorf searching for the tourist office, finally Liam finds it and gets a map of the mountains.
Somethings wrong we can't find our hike on the map. We go back down the road to a ski lift tram station . The attendant says no it's back the other way, by the way he knew 5% english...
We go sit in the van and realize we stopped 30 minutes too soon, we should have kept going in a loop, were on The wrong side of the mountains.
So it's late after 10am we still haven't started our 6 he hike....
So we drive 6 kilometers to the tram on the other side of this valley and realize we can still get to the pass up this lift from the backside.
It's only 2 1/2 hrs.
We pack our packs change shoes, were a t the tram, There s no parking....
We ask the mailperson.
She points to a sign parking that way...
We drive up the hill 1 kilometer, there's another tram building. We park go in.
We try to by tickets, she sells us 8 for 132 Frank's, were confused, she knows zero English, we finally get it straightened out. We have to wait 15 minutes for the tram.  Now a Swiss guy shows up inquiring about the tram, he knows English. We talk, and he says it's going to be hot and thunderstorms. So Liam runs back to the car and gets our raingear..
The tram operator motions us to get in, now this tram has to be 30 yrs old, maybe more....were at about 500 meters, the tram will go up to 1,500 meters. up we go over Swiss houses and farms. finally to the end of the tram.
No one's there...ok we figure out after a few minutes how to let ourselves out...
No one's around , there's half a dozen houses scattered about. We walk on the path, there's the SAC ( Swiss alpine club) sign post with destinations marked in hours and a directional arrow.
