Top of world part 2
So we walk up now here in this beautiful country it's always up, and up more.
We wander between the deserted 1/2 dozen ski houses. Past a restaurant that's open, we inquire what time do u close? 6 pm, when is the last tram down ? 7:15 Ok we'll be back....no were walki g up and it's kinda like a ridge top, andits steep, so like usual were sweating and breathing like crazy...we come to a level clearing w picnic tables a fire pit, an outhouse and a water trough. We use the WC. And I soak my shirt, hat and ear bandana in the cool water. Back on the breathing and sweating " enjoyable hike"...Now we hit a section that has cables and a dddddrrrrrooooppp off...yikes
We keep on its hot
The valley below we can see the farmhouses and hear the cow bells.
Now about these bells, the cows can be found when it's time for milking by the sound of the bells. When the farmer brings the cows from the lower ground up to the mountain farm in early summer, it's traditional to put these massive bells on the cow ( about the size of a 4 gallon pail)
And put flowers and maybe tree branch on their heads....
BTW the bells sound very pretty, except when.....
So we continue sweating and breathing...
Up
Up
Up
Were gaining altitude.
Now the way the Swiss, well Europeans talk about hikes it's in hours.
So all the signposts on hiking trails have destinations marked in hours or percentage of hours...
They also figure that a 300 meter elevation gain takes 1 hour....ya right!
European hikers of all ages are made of bones covered in rope and sinew!
Ok back to the hike
So now we can see the suppose restaurant/ farmhouse and we stop at a signpost. Up from a side trail here comes a fellow and a woman. We wait they arrive, we chat their 70 and they just walked up something I'm afraid to look down. He worked in South Carolina for a couple of years. His English was understandable. They live in the town in the valley. We chat for a bit, we tell them we've got 2 hrs to get to the pass, they say their going to the farm have drink and then back down. We say we're going right past the farm, see ya. 30 seconds later I say to Liam hey why not let's stop have a quick tea and head up. Ok. We stop. The folks joins us at an outside table, and laugh, they order a Swiss coffee? And he says, people stay here, sleep over. I say What? In the barn, in the hay? ( I've heard about this) no he says there's sleeping lofts, really? Yawh! Ok I ask the farm woman if we can see them. Yawh!
Wow it's nice above the barn. Below a nice WC, a sweet dining room, Liam let's stay. Ok how much? 55 Swiss Frank's dinner and breakfast included. We're staying! Then I tell her we'd like to pay for the 2 Swiss coffees the hikers had. Ok.
We go back to the table, tell them were staying and the hikers and the woman ( monica) are talking in german..then he starts saying " nine" I look at him and plug my ears....he shakes his head, keeps talking to monica....5 minutes later monica comes out with 2 Swiss coffees, Armand says "American boys" heres a Swiss coffee for YOU 2! A tiny hint of brown water and a healthy cup of schnapps....we chat for a while, they head down the mountain we head up....sweating and breathing. We stop after 30 minutes, enjoy the most spectacular views, we separate and have some time alone in this I ncredible piece of heaven.
