Lauterbrunnen, seitzerland
OMG we wake up
Yes were here
Waterfall s on both sides of the valley, straight cliffs rising hundreds of feet.
Swiss style houses, green grass.
Coffee frto. The jet boil stove, I can't wait to have real coffee, that's not instant, or liquid concentrate, or European k (excessive packaging) cups...
We poop, pack backpacks and quickly head out. Walking back to the village.
A brisk walk, let's go to the train station.
Now, here in Switzerland one can set their watch on public transportation schedules. Chris the friend of nans our rafting buddy. Said he'd take the train and bus from Bern, 1.5 hours and meet us at the end of the bus line, on the bench nect to the WC...... Ok we need to get to the end of the valley.... we ask at the tourist info office ( Liam falls immediately in love with this young woman) back one block, at the sign that says post, the driver will sell you a ticket. Ok were on the bus, now there s 2 stops with the same name, we gamble and see that the last one has a bench by the WC.. ok were early, we walk to the restaurant 100 meters ,have a coffee and split a sandwhich...its time.
Back to the bench, hello it's Chris, uh oh he's one of those muscle and bones guys in great shape, in is 70's..... were surely gonna sweat and breath .today...this hiking and getting In Shape stuff is work....
Off we go up the trail, it begins to rain, we put on Rain gear, 10 minutes later it stops and we take off the sauna suits..and it's fookin up,up up....Chris is great, he even sweats a little to make us feel good. He tells us a little about himself, moved here 15 yrs ago w his wife, no car takes public transportation everywhere. Teaches at Bern university part time. Loves to hike.
We turn right after 1 hour and head towards the cliff top town of murren. We have views but the clouds are dark and moving constantly. We cant see to far up the cliffs and hills. This is the mountain where 007 " On her majesty's secret service" movie was fimed .The mountain across the valley is "the Eiger" .Now this town can be reached by gondola. It's a ski town, with no road access. We finally get there. We find chris favorite restaurant and order "rosti"..
Shredded previous boiled potatoes, then they're fried in butter, til crispy. With an egg or cheese on top. We call em hash browns and we don't make them crispy, all thru..
We ask Chris about the couple of helicopter take offs and landing we've seen near the campground. He says switzerland runs on helicopters. They bring supplies up to the mountain huts. They're used for rescue. They're used to build structures on the mountains etc...
We walk along the train tracks about 2 kilometers to the tram and take the tram down. We have an espresso with Chris and thank him for a glorious day. He recommends that we hike up the same path tomorrow and turn left up onto the glacier field, instead of right . Ok for us. We bid farewell, he walks On the train, to return to Bern. We walk back to our campsite about 1.5 kilometers thru the village.. hopefully the clouds will be gone tomorrow, and we can see the glaciers and peaks
